Emblems of the Month

February

Greetings Friends! It’s finally February, but that is not the most exciting part. 2016 is a leap year, which means this month has 29 days and it only happens every four years! Do you know why this happens? Let me tell you!

A complete orbit of the earth around the sun takes exactly 365.2422 days to complete, but the Gregorian calendar uses 365 days. So leap seconds – and leap years – are added as means of keeping our clocks (and calendars) in sync with the Earth and its seasons. The Roman calendar did have 355 days with an extra 22-day month every two years, until Julius Caesar became emperor and ordered his astronomer Sosigenes to devise a better system in the 1st Century. Sosigenes decided on a 365-day year with an extra day every four years to incorporate the extra hours, and so February 29 was born.

In light of leap year, February’s focus will be space emblems. Feel free to share these facts with your youth!

Since each troop can earn two emblems a month, all troops can focus on their cooking badges in which they can work on making tortellini, carrot cake, banana bread or homemade soup which all have national days in February. Since Rangers do not have a cooking badge, feel free to Design Your Own badge that can tie in with cooking.
